  • The most common emulsions in the cosmetic industry (about 80 percent) are the ones in which oil is dispersed in water (o/w). They are high water content and, therefore, low in cost. These emulsions are favored for their stability and flexibility, as well as their non-greasy, non-oily feel. On the other hand, w/o systems offer longer lasting emolliency, wash-off resistance, and barrier protection. They spread more easily on skin, and often leave a lubricious, rich or oily feel, favored by mature clients and consumers with dry, barrier-compromised skin. These formulas tend to be less cost effective, as oils are always more costly than water and these types of emulsions are generally more difficult to produce.

  • The high-pressure homogenizer mainly relies on three repeatedly moving plungers to generate a great pressure. The first and second homogenizing valves are homogenized and emulsified, and the materials are discharged from the discharge port to make the materials more delicate and not stratified.

  • The main functions are: improve the uniformity and stability of the product; increase the shelf life; reduce the reaction time to save a lot of catalysts or additives; change the consistency of the product to improve the taste and color of the product


 How do we know our emulsion is sufficiently stable?

  • An emulsion could separate at any time. Tell-tale signs may appear during or soon after making the lotion or, these signs may appear months later, perhaps when a customer takes the product on vacation to a warmer climate:

  • Creaming occurs when the oil phase migrates to form a layer at the top of the emulsion
  • Flocculation is when the oil phase droplets cluster together but they do not join into a larger droplet, giving the appearance of a “fluffy cloud”
  • Coalescence is similar to flocculation but the droplets merge with each other to form a larger droplet
  • Phase separation is the most obvious sign of emulsion instability and involves the collision and coalescence of the oil phase droplets ultimately resulting in the visible appearance of separate oil and water phases.
